I’ve recently finished with some chicken coop Updates and Additions. These updates and Additions are for allowing our chickens do have more activity’s while in the chicken run as well as allowing them a way to access the outdoors for free grazing during the day.
Chicken Coop Updates and Additions
See pictures below of the slider door I’ve added for the hens to access the outdoors. They can come and go at their own leisure…
How Did I Build This Slider Door Inside The Coop?
Very simple! I used reclaimed 1″x 4″ pine wood as you can see in the pictures above. For the track behind these 1×4’s I used a 1x that was a little thicker than the actual 1″ board and ripped it down to a 2″ wide strip for behind these 1×4’s which gives space and acts as a track for my 3/4″ plywood door to slide up an down.
I used a 3/4″ treated plywood to make the slider door out of for a few reasons. (1). I already had it. (2). Weather resistant and will last. (3). This Treated 3/4″ is heavy and I wanted that so this door would have enough weight to slide back down without having to help it or add weights to it.
In the building of this slider door I also allowed enough space on each side for swelling of the door. By leaving some space and not making it a exact tight fit, this allows for swelling of the door in the event it gets wet and it also allows for easier sliding up and down without side to side resistance. I also aligned the pulley and pull rope perfectly with the center of the door. When pulling this door up and letting it down it is centered perfectly and works with ease.
Cheap and Simple Chicken Coop Updates and Additions
All of these cheap and simple Updates and Additions done to the coop and chicken run was from using reclaimed and used lumber and materials. Most of the materials used was from the recent tornado and storm cleanup I did, and some was used stuff laying around our farm.

More to come soon as we start back in on the outdoor chicken run fencing project and completion.
