Barn Wood – White Wash Technique…

Share This Post With A Friend

We wanted to share our recent 100 year old barn wood, and white wash techniques with you and share updated pictures of our cabin project.

Barn Wood

This barn wood shown below in these pictures is actually the original skins of the old barn we tore down over the winter months. This wood wasn’t perfect, but we didn’t want perfect for this cabin. Our goal was to use all reclaimed wood and make sure we finished with a very rustic look and feel.

The white wash technique was Rhonda’s idea, and she not only done this entire step, but she also prepped and sanded all of this wood to clean it up and get it ready for the white wash step. It started with cleaning up the wood with wire brush, then lightly sanding the wood with an orbital sander and 60 grit paper. Next was blowing it off with air hose, wiping down with soft hand broom and rags. Then it was applying white paint to boards and using a clean rag to wipe off the paint after allowing it to sit for several minutes. The longer you leave the paint on, the more will stay on, so it all depends on the look you are after.

Notice in the pictures above, the heavy/thick 3/4″ rope at top of first two pictures. This will be the trim used all the way around the inside of cabin. This rope just gives it a cool look and that old barn feel. Same type rope used in haylofts and trolleys used back in the day.

This cabin project has taken longer than anticipated, but the finished product will be well worth the extra effort and wait. When using 100 year old barn wood like we have chose to, there are nails to pull out, many places in the wood that have to be cut out due to deterioration, warping and lots of cleaning and preparation for indoor use. This always takes much longer and more work, but that was the route we chose to take on this build.

Most would have taken the easy way and bought all new wood, but that would be the end look too (the new look), which isn’t the look we wanted. To us, anytime you can used reclaimed barn wood, or anything else for that matter, it is a win win!!
