We are plowing deep for more pumpkin fields. Ground that has never been farmed can be plowed as deep as possible for best results.
You can plow deep in the fall and let it lay all winter and then disk it in the spring before planting, or so what we are doing today.
Last night I plowed another field as deep as I could pull it to bring good soil up top. This afternoon I disked this field different directions to really work it down and even it out. Due to lots of clay, I had to go over it several times to get rid of the large clumps of clay.
Plowing Deep for more Pumpkin Fields
Here’s the reason for plowing and then disking it right away.
With pumpkins, weed and grass control is a huge issue. You cannot use any weed or grass killer due to killing your pumpkin crop, so unless you want to weed by hand, then using cover crops is the next best thing.
It’s been so wet here all year, being able to do this any earlier has been impossible. Watching the weather and seeing a small window of opportunity, I decided to jump right on this and get it done so that I can get winter wheat drilled in this week.
Why Winter Wheat?
Wheat is one of the best cover crops there is, so by doing winter wheat, I can cut the wheat in the spring…right before time to plant pumpkins and then leave the wheat stubble standing and plant pumpkins and sweet corn right through it. This will help keep the weeds and grass to a minimum, and make for much cleaner crops.
This is what’s going on this week at Pin Oaks Farm. Oh, and we are also working hot and heavy on our cabin so we can start up our outdoor wedding venue in the spring of 2020.
Pictures below are of fresh deep plowed field. You can see how rough plowing leaves the field, but it is so worth the effort.
The last picture above was a small area full of thorny locust trees and other small scrub brush trees. We cut them right at the ground level, then I plowed right through the area and it literally brought up the stumps, roots and all. This made the field much more usable!!
Pictures below are after disking this afternoon. See the difference it makes?
You can see the pictures of plowing deep and how much large slabs of dirt was rolled up and over, then the next pictures you can see how nicely it disked. The dirt was really working nice today.
Updated pictures coming soon of our cabin and how much it’s changing. Don’t forget to check out our Facebook page and hit the “Like Button” so you can get notifications of updates, events and other projects we are working on.
