Water Lines In The Ground – Checking For Leaks…

Share This Post With A Friend

Water lines in the ground and covered up. The only thing that we haven’t covered up is areas of connections. Where the water hydrants are located, and all locations of tees or other splice connections were made. These areas will be covered up once the water meter has been set and water turned on and everything has been tested/checked for leaks.

Pictured below is parts of the driveway that we wanted to get done right away so we could cover back up and continue using them. Wouldn’t you know as soon as we got started covering everything back, the rains began to fall. Now we have a huge mud pit. Our curious chickens and ducks are out checking everything out too. Lol

In the pictures below you will see all of the materials used in this expensive project, as well as a paid receipt of listed items. All of the Woodford water hydrants (Iowa Brand) were purchased at Menards.

In the photo above you can see how we ran the electric wires and the 3/4″ water line inside. The reason was an easy decision when it came down to breaking up the concrete shop floor and then tunnel underground into the shop. Not an option, so we chose this route and will fill the pvc pipe with spray foam from each. The valve we purchased at Menards for the inside is also a freeze less and the drain end will be down inside the pvc pipe and under the 8″ concrete slab, so I don’t feel as though we will ever have a freezing problem. Everything seen in the picture will be covered with dirt and rock on top.

The Woodford water hydrants are the freeze less type as long as you follow the directions for installation. We chose the 4′ bury depth to make sure we never have to worry about freeze ups.

We wanted to share this project, but also to help others installing their Water lines in the ground and possibly be able to do it easier than what it was for us. Running our water lines was very pricey due to the extremely long distance that we had to run the lines. Our meter set alone was $1775.00. We used 4-300′ rolls of CTS 1-1/2″ water line @ $328.95 per roll, and many brass fittings, tees, etc. Some of our brass fittings was over $75.00 each…

Anything that is direct bury (for underground use) will be expensive, but a must have for long term and for safe drinking water. 3/4 CTS water line was also used in all places where hydrants were set. Part of our trench from the shop to the cabin was shared with 2 awg-3 wire direct bury electrical wire (seen above) so that we could have electricity to the cabin.

Always do your best,

-Mike and Rhonda Pilcher
