I’ve found that sometimes brush clearing has to be “spring brush clearing” to make certain that it’s something you want to clear out.
Spring Brush Clearing is a time when things are starting to get green and sprout out. Rose thickets, and the clusters of hedge brush is something that I most certainly want to clear out before they really start growing and spreading.
The rose thickets are awful to work with and stick you, poke you in places you won’t forget, they grab your clothing and make you bleed. If let go, they spread and take over areas like crazy.
How To Stop Regrowth
To stop the regrowth of rose thickets and other scrub brush that you don’t want growing back, you must use Tordon. This Tordon is a bit pricey, but goes a long ways if used properly. To get the best results, make sure you apply Tordon on freshly cut sprouts and stumps. I use it on all tree stumps I cut as well as all brush.
This Tordon can be purchased at your local farm and home dealers and some hardware stores that carry farm supply’s. I am currently paying $17.95 per bottle for this Tordon, but unless you want to keep going back and cutting what you’ve already cut over and over, then there is no other choice. You either pay with your time, your sweat and blood, or your money.
When clearing out brush, hedge rows and other trees that are dead and needing cut down, you will also be able to use this as firewood like we do.
The areas in the pictures above here was totally consumed with heavy rose thickets, hedge brush and clusters of other nasty scrub brush. Make sure and pile your brush in areas where there isn’t a great deal of tree limbs from good trees hanging down to catch on fire and ruin good trees, or catch your timber on fire.
Spring Brush Clearing and Thorny Locust Trees
Spring Brush Clearing isn’t something that is a lot of fun, but it sure makes for a great looking area once done. I’m telling you right now, if you let this stuff go, it WILL take over your property before you know it. Thorny Locust Trees is something else I like to remove due to their spreading and taking over your property. Thorny locust trees are nasty and are basically worthless. If you don’t mind dealing with the thorns, it does make hot burning firewood.
There are areas on our off grid property that we have decided to leave a lot of Brush and heavy timber for the wildlife. We never cut down good trees for any reason unless they have been severely damaged in storms. Our focus is on trees that are either dead, or already down for the vast majority of our firewood.
Before and After Pictures
Below you will see how well our pond areas look now. You can see the before pictures by searching “before and after pictures” on the this website. Search form is located on the right hand side under our picture. This will allow you to see exactly what we started with.
All of the areas around the pond and especially around the cabin had years of neglect. Make sure to check out the before and after pictures blog post. You will then have a better idea of what we started with. See the before and after pictures of our little farm << here. These pictures taken today that are right above here are the most current pictures we have of “after” cleanup.
We have worked very hard on our property to get it to this point and has been worth every minute we’ve spent on it. There is still lots to do and we are looking forward to seeing it when we are finished.
It’s time to start your spring brush clearing. Get started on yours now before everything starts growing and blooming.
Always do your best,
P.S. We are considering opening up our dream off grid property to local photographers. This would be for doing family pictures, wedding pictures, senior pictures and more…
