I am sure you’ve heard about the drought causes deadly mudslide in California? This often happens when a long drought is suddenly hit with heavy rains, then ground disturbances cause mudslides…landslides.
They are calling it the perfect storm of land development. Fire, wind and then rain conspired to create the deadly avalanche of mud and debris that leveled homes, swept away cars, and took many lives in Southern California early this week. So what causes this enormous furry of mud?
Drought Causes Deadly Mudslide In California
These mudslides/landslides and debris flows are caused by disturbances in the natural stability of a slope. Mud slides can accompany heavy rains or follow droughts, earthquakes or volcanic eruptions.
Wildfires and debris flow rapidly in Southern California. Post-fire debris flows are most common within two years of a fire and are usually triggered by heavy rainfall.
Expansion of man-made developments into fire-prone wild-lands” has made the region susceptible to wildfires and the “flooding and debris flows that are common in the aftermath of the fires.
The flows are triggered either by surface erosion resulting from rainfall runoff or by land-sliding that results from infiltration of rainfall into the ground. Fires actually reduce the infiltration capacity of soils, which will highly increase runoff and erosion.
A huge wall of water and mud will roar down hillsides quickly and gain sufficient power to sweep up rocks and boulders that could have potentially obstructed its downward path. These California mudslides have caused so much devastation and destruction, to the point it is very overwhelming.
Massive Cleanup Underway In California
The resulting slurry of these rocks and mud may pick up trees, houses, cars, trucks and anything else that is in it’s powerful path. The cleanup process is underway and will take a long time to cleanup the mud, trees, large boulders, automobiles, homes and other debris left from the furry of this violent mudslide.
