We will have more pumpkins to plant tomorrow on this new ground. As you can see in the pictures below, the new ground is ready to plant.
This new ground was in sod and I’ve just finished discing it as deep as I could get the disc to go. I added more weight to the weight boxes to make it cut deeper, which worked very well. One of the good things about all the rain we’ve recently had has made the ground very moist and fairly easy to tear up.
I told my wife that we would eventually use these cement curbs, and sure enough, I’ve found a great use for them. These dudes weight over 100# each and work well for disc weights.
Tomorrow we will plant more pumpkins on this new ground. The pictures below here will show you the pasture where we will be planting more pumpkins…
Below is a video I shot today to share how I’ve taken our John Deere 494a corn planter and converted one row for planting pumpkins manually. This is a “this year” solution simply because these large pumpkin seeds will not feed through the seed plates.
This winter I will be working on another planter we have for parts to make it plant pumpkins. This will be a 2 row planter that I am making special seed plates for. These seed plates will accommodate the large awkward sized pumpkin seeds.
Why Did We Decide To Plant More Pumpkins?
It’s real simple. We felt as though we would run out of pumpkins early into the fall pumpkin season and not have enough for Halloween. This was enough to make us decide on discing up more pasture for another area for more pumpkins.
