Today was a very busy but effective day of Planting Sweet Corn and Pumpkins at Pin Oaks Farm.
Planting the sweet corn π½ was a piece of cake, but the pumpkins π was a whole new adventure. All in all it was a very productive day of planting sweet corn and pumpkins.

Why Do We Plant Sweet Corn and Pumpkins Differently?
You can see in the pictures and videos that we are using a JD 494A planter for the sweet corn and pumpkins. However, I removed one planter box and added a make shift work station for Rhonda to walk along beside and drop the pumpkin seeds.
The pumpkin seeds are so large that they will not feed properly through the planter plates. See the pictures below here of the make shift work station for hand planting the pumpkins…one row at a time.
Many people say that there is no way to plant pumpkin seed without doing it the way we are doing it, or similar ways. This winter I will be doing my best to prove those people all wrong.
Planting Sweet Corn and Pumpkins The Old School Way
Some would consider our ways the “old school” way of planting pumpkins. It is except we aren’t using a 4 legged horse like the Amish do…lol. I literally threw this work station together and modified our JD planter to plant our pumpkins in less than 1 hour.
Why?
Rain was on the way and we wanted to make sure we had the pumpkins in the ground before another rain caught us. On several occasions the fields have been ready to plant and then the rain stopped us from planting anything.
We are finished planting sweet corn and pumpkins, so now we will move onto the off grid cabin project.
I will share Rhonda’s raised bed garden and how we’ve had to “critter proof” it in the next blog post.

Always do your best,
P.S. We have a great deal of extra parts laying around for a John Deere 494A planter if you or someone you know is in needs of planter parts. You can reach us by using the “Contact Us” page above, or simply comment below.
