This post is to share how to get and use Free Lumber and Materials from a Tornado. Recently we had storms pass through our area in Trimble MO and caused severe damage. So instead of throwing all of this in the dumpsters, I felt like we could reclaim and use some of this Lumber and materials on our Pin Oaks Farm projects.
Using free Lumber and Materials is sometimes a pain, but is also helpful on the pocketbook not having to constantly be spending money. Using reclaimed materials is good for the environment and also financially smart.
Check out the video below to see how:
Using Free Lumber and Materials
In the pictures below you will see the damage from this EF2 Tornado and you may be wondering how I was able to salvage anything at all. Well, I did as you can see in the video above.
In the pictures above I think anyone can see good stuff laying around. It’s free Lumber and Materials in most cases if you are able to ask or volunteer your help, or if you happen to know someone personally that has had this happen to them. To many people this is way to much work. To us it’s money in our pockets. Even though this will take us weeks upon weeks to clean up, its a huge benefit for us in many ways.
How To Use Lumber With Broken Ends
If you have broken ends or corners on the Lumber, then simply cut off the ends and use the remainder. What if you have 12 foot pieces and 6″ to 12″ is broken on one end or the other? Use your tape measure and mark off 10′, then square it and cut it there. Now you have an 10′ piece of lumber to use for your projects.
My favorite is cutting the majority of 2×4’s into 8′ pieces since that is what we use the most of. Of course it’s nice to have 10′ and 12′ pieces of lumber as well. On rafters like pictured above can be torn down fairly easy. You can reuse the rafter brackets on other projects and pull the nails out for reuse. Use a claw hammer and or a wrecking bar/crow bar to remove nails and brackets.
Maybe you know of storms in your areas like these that just rolled through our area? If so, then go ask around and see if you can help clean up for free Lumber and Materials. Most of the time the owners will allow you to do this so they don’t have to pay for clean up. Sometimes you might even get lucky and get paid, and still be able to take the Lumber and Materials that you want. Put it to use instead of throwing it in dumpsters and sending it to the trash.
You can see more storm cleanup in the Trimble MO and Smithville MO area here.
Ask around, it might just pay off!
Always do your best,
